Understanding the Safety Reverse Mechanism
Under United States federal law (UL 325 regulations enacted in 1993), all residential garage door openers must incorporate secondary safety entrapment protection. This protection is provided by photo-electric eyes mounted 6 inches above the garage floor on both sides of the vertical track.
One sensor sends an invisible infrared light beam across the threshold of the doorway to the receiving sensor. If anything breaks that invisible beam—or if the sensors cannot see each other—the opener's logic board automatically aborts closure and reverses the door to the fully open position.
Interpreting the LED Sensor Indicator Lights
Before calling for professional repairs, look closely at the small indicator lights located on the exterior casing of both sensor units:
• The Amber / Yellow Light: This is the sending unit (transmitter). It should glow solid amber whenever the opener is connected to power. An unlit amber light points to severed wiring or a disconnected terminal.
• The Green Light: This is the receiving unit. It must shine bright, steady green. If the green light is completely off, flickering, or blinking rapidly, the two sensors are misaligned and cannot detect each other's optical beam.
• 10 Blinks on the Main Opener: On most Chamberlain, Craftsman, and LiftMaster openers, if the main motor lights flash 10 times after a failed closure, it is the official diagnostic code for photo-eye error.
Quick Sunlight Blindness Check
If your door closes fine at night but refuses to close on sunny mornings or afternoons, low-angle sunlight is blinding the receiving sensor. Swapping the positions of the sending and receiving units or fashioning a temporary cardboard sun-shield around the lens often solves this issue.
Step-by-Step Alignment & Cleaning Steps
Follow these non-hazardous diagnostic steps to restore proper sensor alignment:
1. Clean the Lenses: Wipe both optical glass lenses gently with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Accumulated spiderwebs, dust, and dried lawn clipping debris frequently obstruct the infrared beam.
2. Check for Obstructions: Inspect the physical path between the two sensors. Bicycles, trash bins, garden tools, or loose hanging wires can subtly break the optical beam.
3. Adjust the Wing Nut: Loosen the wing nut holding the receiving sensor bracket to the track. Slowly swivel the sensor up, down, or sideways until the flickering green LED becomes completely solid, then carefully tighten the wing nut by hand without shifting the angle.
When the Issue is Inside the Opener or Track
If both sensor LEDs remain completely solid green and amber, yet the door still reverses midway down, the issue is usually mechanical resistance rather than optical misalignment.
Worn rollers, dry tracks, or seasonal contraction of metal rails can cause the door to bind in its frame. When the opener's travel module senses resistance exceeding its programmed safety force limit, it assumes an obstruction is present and reverses immediately.
If sensor alignment and track cleaning do not resolve the issue, an independent technician can test the opener's internal logic board, measure track plumb, and recalibrate force limits safely.
Emergency Manual Override
In an emergency where you must close the garage door with faulty sensors, press and hold the wall-mounted push button continuously until the door reaches the floor. Do not release the button until the door has completely stopped.
